Projecting The Past: Documenting Our History

My Students

Citizens work together to solve problems...this is one of the crucial ideas students in my 7th grade Social Studies class wrestle with daily both in their own work and in their examination of history. Having the technology and the tools to do this exploration well is paramount to our success.

I teach approximately 80 students from an extremely diverse set of cultural backgrounds.

There are a multitude of first languages spoken in the homes of my students and there are at least half that are considered in need financially. Putting these diverse groups together for learning is a wonderful opportunity that I attempt to take advantage of as much as possible. Looking at history through these multiple lenses and sharing in projects makes the learning so much more authentic for students. Being successful in our class means sharing ideas and working together to be better then we are individually. It means working with such a diverse population in order to facilitate that learning is both a challenge and a privilege.

My Project

We are embarking on a service learning project in which we are partnering with a local community group to inform the community about the rich historical and cultural pieces in the Evergreen Cemetery which is next to our school. The Friends of Evergreen Cemetery, our community partners, have identified the need to increase awareness of historical sites in cemetery. We are developing brochures, maps, and activity books for other students that will help to educate user of the cemetery (it is also a beautiful park-like area with great trails!) about the rich history they are walking right by during their jog or walking their dogs. Obtaining a projector for all the classes will allow each group to easily share the work they are doing. It will allow more readily share documents, products and ideas in order to complete projects. The LCD projector will also help us in editing our products and in giving each other constructive feedback on our work.

Meeting a genuine community need and partnering with a community group has already excited my students.

The addition of this vital piece of technology will help us to actually produce quality products to help the cemetery spread the wonderful rich history located inside. Thanks you so much for your help with our service learning project.
