Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students love to have their efforts recognized. While I believe in intrinsic motivation as the primary goal for life-long success, I also know that naming and reinforcing their good choices helps them recognize and understand the specific behaviors and actions that will make them more successful. Therefore, I have a system where students can earn points to periodically spend in my "prize store."

Each prize is worth a specific number of points, so students can choose whether they want to spend their points now or continue saving toward a "more expensive" goal.

In this way, students get immediate feedback when they get the point (or see others getting points) for helpful and positive actions, and then also receive a delayed reward of their own choice at designated times. These positive reinforcements help with classroom management and support students as they learn the behaviors that will enhance their learning.

Since I moved from teaching my own self-contained classroom (where I relied more heavily on relationships and norms) to now teaching science to 25 different elementary classes, I have found that these types of rewards are great for helping students quickly understand what I'm looking for when we only have an hour per week to complete our projects. I like focusing on the positives and building on them, and the students are always delighted with the little treasures they buy with their points.
