Oldies but Goodies: Classic Titles for the School Library
My students need copies of classic titles of children's books for the school library and media center to help increase their fluency and to continue to foster their love of literature.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Every day in our school library, I see our bright, and energetic students rushing to get their hands-on books that pique their curiosity and interest in the world around them.
Despite this love of learning and interest in reading, due to our urban location and the personal backgrounds of some of our students, they aren't always afforded the same advantages that other students and school districts might have. Our elementary school is almost 100 years old and most of the students live in the neighborhood. Our school is a Title One school in a low income area. However, despite the financial difficulties that many of our students and our school district deal with, these students do not let this distract from their desire to learn all they can. Furthermore, our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping our students become the best learners and people they can be. This has been proven by our school's ability to meet state educational standards and reach full accreditation.
My Project
Every week, students come to the media center to have literacy lessons and check out books to read. They are allowed to choose fiction or non-fiction books, and are allowed to pick books to assist them with a research project or for personal enjoyment. Although we have a lot of great books to choose from, our Eric Carle and Berenstain Bears collection continues to be popular with students from all grade levels. Because these titles are so popular, the collection we have is well-loved (i.e. very worn!) and many titles are missing. Even though these titles have been around for many years, they continue to be popular with the students, and are great books to help struggling readers with their fluency. If we were able to increase our inventory of these titles, students would be able to foster their love of reading and get the great personal enjoyment that comes from reading a book for pleasure.
Donations to my Oldies but Goodies project will greatly improve our library by giving students access to books that hold their interest and can help improve their literacy skills.
Students will be able to have greater access to books, and some of our struggling readers can improve their comprehension, fluency, and rhyming skills by having access to titles they are interested in reading. Students shouldn't be deprived of things that pique their interest in learning simply because their school can't afford to get materials they need. Therefore, any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
