No More Homework Excuses

My students need 24 dictionaries, pencils, calculators, notebook paper, rulers, crayons, markers, and pencil sharpeners to help them complete their homework.

My Students

Despite what my students think, I do not assign homework to cramp their social life or because I am "mean." On the contrary! I assign homework because my students need to practice the skills that they learn in school, in order to reach their potential and be successful!

I teacher in a school where there is a 97% poverty rate, and my students face many of the challenges associated with living in a low income community.

Third grade is a critical year for students - they are transitioning from lower elementary and becoming more responsible for themselves and their work. To help with the transition and foster a greater sense of personal responsibility, this year I have worked with students on focusing on the solution in situations, rather than getting overly fixated on the problem. For example, if someone is hungry in the morning, I don't want to hear them complaining about the problem (being hungry). Rather, I want to them to come to the class community with the problem so that we can brainstorm potential solutions - such as getting to school earlier for free breakfast or working with the kitchen staff to save extra cereal in the classroom for students.

My Project

One problem that consistently comes up, has to do with homework. Many of the scripted homework assignments ask students to measure, or color in a certain pattern in math, or define an unfamiliar word to use in a sentence. The reality is, my students do not have the supplies at home that they need to complete these assignments. Things like dictionaries, crayons, rulers, and even calculators just don't exist for them, and I do not have have enough in the classroom to lend out every night. I am asking for supplies that I can use to make "homework packs" for my students. I want to supply everyone with a a plastic bag of all the essentials that they'll need to complete their homework for the year - so no one can ever again use the excuse, "I didn't have a _______." This "homework pack" will include essentials like a dictionary, pencils, crayons, a ruler, a calculator and extra paper.

I will be moving with my class to 4th grade in September, and I want to be sure that they have all the tools that they need to be successful - literally!

By providing my students with these resources, you will ensure that my students will get the practice that they need! Please support my students in their drive for success!
