Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Shakespearean language when you hardly know English? Sounds like a challenge but not an impossibility. I teach 30 smart, dedicated, college-bound students in a Title I school in Texas. My students are in an environment that is dedicated to making them college ready, despite low SES or language barriers.
My students are in what's called AVID- a college ready program that starts in 6th grade.
These kids do not have substantial home support but have the dedication and the ability to succeed with help from the school. These are students that are "in the middle"- they are not GATE/AP but they need a push, a challenge and inspiration from their teachers. I have taught this class only one year, but I see how motivated our students can be with a teacher that cares and who uses the right tools to allow individual success.
My Project
The "No Fear Shakespeare" version of The Tempest is absolutely essential to my students this year and years to come. In 8th grade they are introduced to much more challenging literature and this will be the first Shakespearean novel they encounter. 9th-12th grade they will have many more Shakespearean comedies and tragedies to read, so the first one that they see should be something that is welcoming although challenging. The language used in the "No Fear" version is the original and then on the opposite page the language is modern. This will enable my students to see the beauty of Shakespeare as well as understand what the story is really about.
By purchasing 30 "No Fear" The Tempest books as a class set for my room, you are allowing many children to ease into the intense, passionate and beautiful language of Shakespeare without becoming overwhelmed and discouraged.
