Native Americans Still Exist?!

My students need 12 books about Native Americans' lives today.

My Students

"Native Americans still exist?!" My heart sank when I heard this question toward the end of a fascinating, in-depth study of the Eastern Woodlands Native Americans' culture before 1492.

My students are 3rd and 4th graders at a small urban public elementary school in New York State.

They are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special education needs. My past classes have all loved learning about the native people who were the first inhabitants of our area, when it was all forest, wetlands, and seashore.

My Project

But as I hinted above, I've come to realize that a Native American curriculum that neglects the lives of native people today is fundamentally incomplete. Yes, my kids need to know about the lives of people on our continent before European contact. But that information by itself is woefully inadequate. The Native Americans living all across the country today deserve to be known, and my students should know them. Along with meeting native people through a local organization in our city, I want my kids to study Native Americans all over the U.S. with the help of the 12 books requested in this grant. By reading these books, discussing them, and writing about them, my students will come to know contemporary Native Americans as real, live people. My kids will understand that Ojibways, Pueblos, and other Native Americans are people like them in many ways, and different in others--but always real, and still here!

I am really excited to develop this new component of my social studies curriculum.

I want my students to know at a deep level who the Native Americans are today--not only who they used to be. The books in this grant will form the foundation for this learning.
