We got the hemp cord that we used in both of those projects from this grant. So the supplies that we bought with your money literally were the string that bound every child's artwork together. \r\n\r\nThese supplies were essential to student learning in two 3rd grade classes. They are absolutely obsessed with birds and share their observations all the time. We have gone birdwatching several times, both with guides and on our own, and the kids are always so amazed to see birds close-up from far away! They each chose one particular New York State bird to focus on, and they are always telling each other, \"I saw your bird yesterday!\" and other little stories.\r\n\r\nAlthough I am thrilled to have my kids so interested in birds, what is even more important to me is that they are experiencing the intrinsic joy in learning anything, and the knowledge that all around them is a fascinating world that can't always be represented by a worksheet or school activity. Birds are both predictable and unpredictable, like the \"real world\" outside school. \r\n\r\nI am convinced that long after leaving my class, my students will continue to love and respect birds and nature. They have to do computer programs for an assigned amount of time. They have to take timed assessments. They are required to write mandated writing assignments. Doing hands-on crafts is such a wonderful antidote to all of these mandates. \r\n\r\nThe craft projects you paid for are beneficial to the kids in so many ways. First of all, the kids tend to remember what they have learned during hands-on projects much better than they remember prescribed reading passages from text books. So the hands on work helps them academically. And they are also learning real life skills that they can use again: sewing and weaving. They learn these skills through trial and error, a process that they do not get to use as much as past generations of kids, whose play was entirely in the real world as opposed to on computer screens. \r\n\r\nThese projects also help the children to develop fine motor skills. The books have been a huge help in getting their research started. \r\n\r\nIn addition, we have begun taking bird walks. So far, we've visited a neighborhood park as well as Central Park, which is full of migrating birds right now. The books help us identify the birds we are seeing and hearing all around us, and they go beyond basic identification to help us learn more about different species' nesting habits, behavior, and so on.\r\n\r\nWe will be using these books practically every day for the rest of the school year, and then the kids will get to keep them, which they are so happy about! They had no idea that students in the U.S. can have limited access to books for reasons that are not financial. Book banning is so foreign to them as students in a New York City public school school. But reading these books, along with some news articles, and watching videos, put them right in the shoes of elementary students in Pennsylvania and Florida, where recent bans pulled books off school shelves.\r\n\r\nThis unit was wonderful in many ways. First, it allowed students to listen to and read so many high quality picture books. Doing that, and summarizing and discussing each book, strengthened their reading and listening comprehension, and writing skills. Next, inferring why each book could have been banned sharpened their reasoning skills. Deciding whether they agreed with bans, and writing their ideas down, allowed them to practice forming opinions and expressing those opinions in writing. It was just a very rich experience studying banned books, and it could not have happened without your generous donations!","fullyFundedDate":1764722862730,"projectUrl":"project/we-read-banned-books/9937442/","projectTitle":"We Read Banned Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Dobkin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp112663_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1600472206204","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/112663"},{"teacherId":191,"projectId":9884400,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping us get all of these banned picture books. This project has had a huge effect on our class. The kids have been reading the books both as part of assignments and during free time. They are using them to learn literacy skills, such as summarizing and inferring, as well as to understand better why some people think these books should be banned. They have developed their own opinions on these bans and can articulate them with their reasons.\r\n\r\nAs part of this study, my students performed a play about an episode of book banning in Central York School District in Pennsylvania. This was part of our school's annual MLK Day performance, and my kids were eager to share what they had learned with our entire school community. \r\n\r\nWhile preparing for our play, we met with New York Times reporter Maria Cramer, who wrote an article about Central York, and who helped us understand this process from an insider's point of view. In addition, we're going to be meeting with Aya Khalil, the author of The Great Banned-Books Bake Sale, on Zoom in a couple of weeks, so the kids can see book bans from the author's perspective.\r\n\r\nYour donation allowed our banned books project to flourish! For many of my learners, especially those who need extra support in reading and math, this quiet workspace has been a game-changer. The kids use them frequently and are getting better and better at finding the words they are looking for. \r\n\r\nWhat I think is most beneficial about the dictionaries is that they really promote independence. Instead of waiting for a teacher, kids can find the words they need themselves. \r\n\r\nAnother benefit to the dictionaries is that they reinforce the idea of a base word. For example, a student looking for the word \"walked\" will only find \"walk.\" Then they need to use their other spelling skills to add the suffix. \r\n\r\nThese dictionaries are an essential part of our spelling work, which also includes learning common patterns and rules.
