My Students

My classroom is full of students who are emergent bilingual learners. All of my students are learning English. My emergent bilingual learners are either recent arrivals or brand new to the country. My students bring a wide variety of cultures, languages, and experiences in the classroom in order to create a diverse learning environment.

In addition to learning English, my students are expected to expand their knowledge in order to reach the second grade Common Core curriculum state standards.

My school is a small, inclusive, public school that is part of a large urban district where over 75% receive free or reduced-price lunch.

My Project

Our students come from a diverse range of races, cultures, languages, customs and stories. Helping them learn about themselves, each other and their histories is no small feat, but one that is imbedded in our daily work and discussions.

With a variety of age and grade appropriate biographies and multicultural texts, we can ensure that our students are learning about where they come from and who they could be.

Reading about characters, leaders, heroes and trailblazers who look like them, our students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of where they come from and the endless possibilities of where they can go. These texts will be used throughout different parts of our day, Interactive Read Aloud, Writing, and Social Studies. The goal is to have texts that both provide students with a history of different cultures and races but also to have them see representation of themselves in the texts.
