My Project

Between Covid and local hurricanes, our past three school years have been stressful - for both teachers and students. Earlier this year, I began hosting a Mental Health Monday each month. This allows my students one day each month to de-stress and be better prepared to face their challenging daily classes!

On Mental Health Monday, the only rules are no electronics and doing something that makes you smile.

I have a variety of games, craft supplies, puzzles, and books. Instead of a daily lesson, we spend an entire class period doing these activities! (I also join in - no grading, responding to emails, catching up on my To Do list - I literally just play with my students for 90 minutes!)

Without a doubt - it was one of the best things I did last semester. I heard laughter from kids who always seem stressed; I have kids who found new hobbies that they enjoy. Best of all - they are interacting with each other and building relationships that are vital to our mental well-being. It also gives them the motivation to work hard the rest of the month because they are never too far away from another Mental Health Monday!

I definitely plan to continue this practice this semester - and am looking to add a few new games - like Mysterium, Jenga, Happy Salmon, and Suspend and replenish my craft box with Shrinky Dink film, plastic lacing, and jewelry making supplies.
