My Project

Music has the potential to powerfully impact a student's day at school. Moving to a steady beat can focus their attention and make them more present in the classroom. Listening to the gentle rise and fall of a melody is relaxing, and careful attention to the differences in instrument timbre promotes mindfulness. These skills are essential to success in school.

The instruments I have selected for this project will give my students new opportunities for meditation and self-expression.

They include a rain stick and egg shakers, whose rushing sounds are delightfully satisfying, and a tongue drum, which can be held in a student's lap and played by hand. It is tuned to an Akebono scale from traditional Japanese music. The sound of this scale is described as "hypnotic, majestic, mysterious, and enchanting." The high-quality crafting of the drum I have selected will provide a beautiful tone experience, and its simple design enables children to explore a meditative soundscape freely.
