Help me give my students books like Gary and the Great Inventors, The Undefeated, ABC's of Black History and M is for Melanin. It's important for students to have books with characters that look like them.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from low-income families and our school is high poverty and the students receive free lunch. My students enjoy their time in school. They are always looking for ways to show off their skills through art, building, and play. You can always hear a quiet buzz during work time where they are engaged and eager to learn.
They keep me busy with their many questions and wonderings about the world around them.
My classroom is very diverse. This year with all that they hear on social media and in their neighborhoods, I feel it's important to teach them using books about affirmation and culture.
My Project
Growing up I didn't see or read many books that had characters that look like me. These books will help me to teach our black and brown children that they are worthy. I will use the books to teach children about their history and help them to feel proud of who they are and those who came before them.
The book M is For Melanin was used this year as the focus of our Black History show and the children couldn't stop talking about how much they loved the book.
Having more copies of this book in the classroom will make it easier to share. The books will be a constant reminder of the importance of speaking up for what is right and speaking up when others are silent.
