Meeting Our Sensory Needs

Help me give my students new sensory items to help meet their needs. They love playing with blocks and having safe, soft blocks they will be able to learn to stack and expand their imagination.

My Project

When working in a special needs, self contained classroom, we encounter a lot of different sensory needs. We recognize that some toys are not as engaging to some students and we need a variety of toys, that may look similar, but are able to meet the sensory needs of the students with autism and other developmental delays. Some of these items include transparent colors blocks, sensory mats and calming bottles, playdough, weighted blankets, and oversized soft blocks.

When working with students with developmental delays, we notice quickly that not all children learn the same.

Each child shows us daily, nonverbally, what they need to have their needs met, so having new sensory items in our classroom would help to engage them in new ways. It will help us when working on their daily living, social emotional, and pre-academic skills.
