Mats for Movement at the CCCEPA Performing Arts Magnet

My Students

We are flying wonders! Help us all fly at once. We are a vital performing arts magnet near Atlanta. I teach acting and we are constantly training in theater movement. We need mats to keep us safe, but we only have the small one you see so we have to take turns learning. We want to learn together.

My students are simply incredible.

My magnet school is one of the most diverse populations you will ever see because we draw from an extremely large county, ranging from metro to rural and everything in between. Students audition into the program at the end of the 8th grade and commit to long hours and a ton of hard work. Many of them take bus rides up to 90 minutes long just to get to school each morning. We work our students hard. Our theory is if we teach them at the college level, they will rise to the college level, and they do. We will take a student with little training and an attitude problem and 4 years later graduate professionally trained young men and women with scholarships to major performing arts college programs across the country. Forgive me if I'm gushing, but my kids are worth being gushed over.

My Project

My students literally fly. As I mentioned, we train at the college level. This means that our students are studying college level voice production and movement. Many of these training methods require mats for comfort and for safety. We do acrobatics, tumbling, and contact improvisation. The dance department trains big lifts. We need mats underneath students for these things and we just don't have enough. We never make students work without mats of course, so we end up just having groups waiting to get on the small section of mats we do have. (What you see in my photo is all we have.) If I could get this large mat gifted to my classroom, we could Velcro it to the ones we already have and create amazing works of wonder as a class. As it is now, we can only work in small groups. Having more mat space would mean more kids getting more time to practice and therefore they would be learning more.

Acrobatics and movement training changes lives.

It is amazing to see how the ability to work together as a group to send one student flying through the air Cirque style changes the students. Suddenly, the tall girl does not feel awkward, she feels strong. Students are amazed by how high a shorter boy can fling himself into the air. This kind of work builds confidence and purpose. It brings the students together as a group and my room is filled with the sound of thrilled teenagers. Quite simply, it's a teacher's dream.
