Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My special education students receive instruction in a 7th-grade English Language Arts (ELA) small-group resource setting, where they are expected to engage with the same grade-level state curriculum as their peers. However, their independent reading levels currently range from pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade, creating a significant gap between instructional expectations and their current abilities. This gap makes it challenging for students to access grade-level texts independently and build confidence as readers.

Providing each student with their own books to take home will allow for consistent practice through rereading, which is critical for developing fluency and comprehension.

Additionally, access to take-home books encourages family involvement, giving caregivers the opportunity to read with students, support skill development, and reinforce classroom learning. This increased exposure to reading both in and out of school will help strengthen literacy skills, build confidence, and promote long-term academic growth.
