Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in Garden Grove Unified which is an urban school district in Orange County, California. Many of my students live in multigenerational homes or apartments. My school site is 100% free and reduced lunch. My students here at Eisenhower have challenges each day but come to school ready to learn.

Some of the challenges we have here at Eisenhower are educational, communication, and technology gaps.

Through the pandemic, our school site provided devices and hot spots to a majority of families seeking tools to continue schooling. We have many families who speak another language and we have different educational backgrounds. I am finding out more and more each year that many students are first generational families.

Students seek a balanced day learning as we continue to use devices, reintroduce book routines, and get to work in our outside garden we have on site this year.

My Project

I want to fill my classroom with opportunities to discuss diversity and other conversations that may be tough. This is my first year in a new grade level and I am noticing students using words like "gay" and "lesbian". Also, other words I am choosing to not put in this project write up and I believe my students are using these words to harm other students. I know I have a responsibility to discuss these topics and address these situations which are beginning to appear on the playground or behind students mask.

I feel students are weaponizing words to hurt or make fun of others without having a strong sense of what the word really means.

I want to help my students develop and practice empathy. Help me give my students board games and cards to begin these conversations and support the diverse classroom we have this year.
