Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach kindergarten at a Title I school. Most of the students come from economically challenged homes. Our school has a 91% free or reduced lunch status. It is located in the Tampa Bay area with a large Hispanic community. The majority of my students are English language learners. These students come to kindergarten ready and eager to learn. Their families are very supportive and are also learning the English language. Although all the students are eager to learn how to read, many have not been exposed to pre-school and have limited alphabet knowledge.

My Project

Children who can quickly and accurately identify, say, and write the letters of the alphabet have an advantage in learning to read. Many of the students entering my kindergarten class have not gone to pre-school or VPK. Some are English language learners who are not only learning the language but learning the English alphabet. Having more interactive alphabet games will help my students practice the letters being taught.
