Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I teach a special needs class of students ages three to five. The students that I work one-on-one with throughout the day are profoundly affected by autism spectrum disorder, and I also work with students who have other developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, as well as fine and gross motor delays. All of my students also have speech impairments and delays. They are all at different levels of learning, and they each have different needs -- so the activities and materials in my classroom are uniquely designed and differentiated to accommodate and benefit each child. The students in my class, and their families, have been affected by Hurricane Harvey and we are working together to recover.
My Project
My students need materials that will help them learn and practice early math and literacy skills such as sorting, patterning, number and letter recognition, and counting. Brightly colored shapes, counters, and letters will hold students' attention and interest. Games that make learning fun - such as a math bean bag toss - will be the most successful tools. Activities that appeal to the senses - such as a floating letter puzzle and magnetic manipulatives - appeal to students with autism. Animal, transportation, and around-the-home-object themes are always favorites in our classroom and the students respond positively to learning activities and manipulatives that feature these themes.
