My students need materials that will help them learn and practice early math and literacy skills such as sorting, patterning, number and letter recognition, and counting. Students with autism also have a need for sensory stimulation. Manipulatives and materials that appeal to the senses will hold the students' attention and interest. Games that make learning fun and allow for a hands on expert will be the most successful tools. Activities that appeal to the senses - such as a floating letter puzzle and magnetic manipulatives - appeal to students with autism. Animal, transportation, and around-the-home-object themes are always favorites in our classroom and the students respond positively to learning activities and manipulatives that feature these themes.
