This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching at an amazing, Title I elementary school that acts as a Community Hub, offering wrap around services to support the whole child and their families. We have over twenty different languages/dialects spoken at our school, with families coming from all corners of the world. The vast majority of students (close to ninety percent) qualify for free or reduced price lunches; therefore, we are able to provide every student with a daily breakfast, lunch, and snack. I can't picture myself working at another school. The students are wonderful and the families and community members are extremely supportive.
We need more protection at school.
My students love to learn and in person learning has been the much needed support they need. Let's keep them in school instead of going back to online learning.
My Project
I'd like for my students to have higher quality masks than the district provides as we head into unknown territory of the Covid-19 variants. These are KN95 disposable face masks for kids which is designed to offer more protection than the 3-Ply kids mask the district provides. Our county put out recommendations for the new Omnicron variant that included high quality masks. I teach young learners whose district-provided paper masks often get wet or soiled, rendering them ineffective.
We are back in the classroom; with more indoor recess, colder weather, and more uncertainty, I'd like to keep our students healthy, safe, AND keep them in person learning!
