Inaugural Makerspace for 21st-Century Learners!

My students need an Osmo Genius Kit, Osmo "Pizza Company" game, Makey Makey, copper foil tape, lithium coin batteries, and LED diode light bulbs to start building our Makerspace for exploration and play with STEAM.

My Students

Our school is nestled within a rural community full of hardworking families. My 10th grade students, the proud legacy of their families, are the epitome of curiosity, exploration, and creation. While they enjoy and appreciate traditional methods of reading and writing, they absolutely flourish when provided with STEAM resources because they are able to integrate their love of science, technology, engineering, art, or mathematics (or a combination thereof).

Our school enrolls over 2,500 students with 50% categorized as economically disadvantaged and 44% categorized as "Minority: Non-White" (2015-2016 School Improvement Plan Data).

With such a diverse population, I realize that, although there is no one solution to the complex problem of providing quality education in the 21st-century, integrating opportunities for students to practice S.T.E.A.M. skills within classrooms is a leap in the right direction.

Despite our school being categorized as "High-Poverty," it does not lessen the richness of my students' passion for learning nor their desire to have the most current tools and technology to showcase their academic proficiency and personal passions. With local AND national supporters engaged through DonorsChoose.org, I have a sincere belief that our classroom will CONTINUE to experience the love of corporate and citizen donors! :)

My Project

"A makerspace is a place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials" (Diana Rendina). I passionately believe that makerspaces have a place within a high school environment and that "learning through play" is applicable at any age. If anything, it is extremely relevant at the high school level because students have the capacity and fortitude to engage in prolonged discovery and exploration which will, hopefully, help them connect their skills to possible careers. The requested materials (Osmo Genius Kit, Osmo "Pizza Company" game, Makey Makey, copper foil tape, lithium coin batteries, and LED diode light bulbs) will allow my current and future English Language Arts classes to begin a foray into the makerspaces world by integrating our core curriculum with S.T.E.A.M. concepts and skills.

Imagine how stunned my students will be to discover that they are able to use a banana as a touchpad with a Makey Makey or tinker with copper foil tape, coin batteries, and light bulbs to, literally, light up a scene from a novel or lines of a poem while also engaging their visual thinking, mathematics, creative problem solving, and illustrative skills by using award winning Osmo kits!

A makerspace truly captures the idea that "you are only limited by your imagination" and, with your support, I would appreciate being able to offer my high school students the chance to rediscover the wonder of learning through play with our "Inaugural Makerspaces for 21st-century Learners" project!
