History Comes Alive Through Reading

My students need 16 historical fiction and nonfiction book sets for supporting our 5th grade social studies curriculum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is one thing to learn about history from a textbook. It is another to learn it from historical fiction and nonfiction books. My students need your help unlocking the history of our country through reading books.

My students face many challenges.

At our Title 1 school, 70 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. We have a large Hispanic and African American population. Our kids come from a lower middle class background where parents are struggling in this poor economy just to survive. It is important that they have as much exposure to good literature in school as possible. I don't just want to teach children to read, I want them to love to read. Reading affects all other subject areas in school, such as social studies. If students love to read, they will automatically do better in other areas of school.

My Project

I have requested historical books that will reinforce our 5th grade social studies curriculum. In 5th grade, we learn about explorers, the Colonial Period, Revolutionary War, and the Civil War. The books we need are a mix of historical fiction, biographies of famous historical people, and nonfiction books about what it would really be like to live during our nation's history. The social studies textbook can teach the facts, but these books will make history come alive for my students. Not only will these books help with social studies, but also with reading. I plan to do a "Living Wax Museum" project with the biography books. The students will pair up and study their historical figure, then dress up as that character and write a speech. We will invite other classes to enjoy our "living museum". The historical fiction and time period books will be used in reading in small groups.

These books will support learning about our nation's history for years to come in my classroom.

Your donation will help spark an interest in history for students who need more than just a textbook to learn. They will be able to move on to upper grade levels and have a good foundational knowledge of how our nation came to be.
