My students face many challenges. At our Title 1 school, 70 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. We have a large Hispanic and African American population. Our kids come from a lower middle class background where parents are struggling in this poor economy just to survive. It is important that they have as much exposure to good literature in school as possible. I don't just want to teach children to read, I want them to love to read. Reading affects all other subject areas in school, such as social studies. If students love to read, they will automatically do better in other areas of school.
