Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a student who is non verbal and he is supposed to have an assistive technology device, but it has been almost a year and the school district has not provided him with one. It is very sad and he struggles daily because he cannot communicate with us the way he would like to. We have been using a lot of pictures.

A device would help this student answer questions with more details.

As of right now, he does a lot of choosing between two answers and pointing. If he had this device, we could play more interactive games and he would really feel like a part of the class.

My Project

My student will no longer feel frustrated when it comes to communicating with his classmates. He will be able to respond and collaborate at the same level as his peers.

We would use the device to allow the student to communicate with adults and teachers.

He would use it playing games, with assessments, during the lesson and even for basic needs. I can switch out the pictures throughout the day and this would be more authentic then using the same basic pictures throughout the school day like we have been doing.

I do not want to continue to wait months for this student to get what he needs right now. I want him to like school and enjoy being there instead of feeling frustrated to the point of tears everyday. I want to advocate for him and get him what he needs in order to be successful.
