Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As a first year teacher, I met my students during a welcome tour the week before the school year started. Many of these incredible young people live in urban public housing, are excited about the school year beginning, and were eager to talk with their new teachers and let us know their opinions.

Thinking about our upcoming classroom civics project, I asked them who they considered an American hero.

Without hesitating, one young man answered "John McCain!" His friend simultaneously said "Martin Luther King Jr." I was impressed and thrilled to start the year with my first project related to good citizenship.

My Project

Gone are the days when teachers taught to classrooms filled with desks in long rows, creating a learning environment that privileges the authority of one person and isolating students with unanswered questions. Today's educators know that learning happens constructively when students build meaning in a variety of ways: with their hands, their language, their motion, engaging a variety media, and applying problem solving skills. In today's large classroom, the optimal way to achieve this is in manageable learning groups.

These group work tables will help students build communication and cooperative skills with others, reinforcing Civics lessons about how we operate in civil society.
