Lights, camera, action!!
I teach 6th grade integrated studies. In my class the students use the knowledge they have gained in their core classes (science, social studies, language arts, and math) to complete integrated, project-based learning modules. We are a rural public school with 70% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. I teach in a mainstreamed classroom; meaning special needs and special ed students are taught beside the regular ed students. Technology is highly integrated into my lessons and my students' projects.
Many of my students are not highly motivated, but anytime I bring out a new technology tool for them to use, they immediately perk up. I attended a workshop on digital storytelling, where students brainstorm, write, and produce movies. After studying about ancient civilizations, students may dress up like Julius Caesar and travel to Rome to conquer the country. Their stories will come to life with the use of technology.
To produce digital stories, my students first need a video camera to record their action. A Flip Camera is compact and already contains the software drivers needed to download movies onto any computer. Adobe Premiere Elements is the software program the students will use to edit their movies - add sound effects, transitions, and green-screen backgrounds. I already have a green screen which will allow students to have images or video clips to appear behind them during their movie. (This is the effect that weathermen use when standing in front of the weather map).
This project will motivate my students to use a new form of technology, build team building skills amongst their peers, and reinforce their knowledge in core content areas.
Please help my student become the future Steven Spielbergs!
