Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our middle school students are full of knowledge, ideas, and potential. Many of our English Learners have worked incredibly hard to develop strong English language skills and are ready to demonstrate their growth during TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) testing. However, for many students, the biggest obstacle is not their ability—it is their confidence. TELPAS requires students to speak aloud in English as part of the assessment process.

Noise-canceling headphones will create a more comfortable testing environment by reducing distractions, increasing focus, and helping students feel secure when speaking.

While many of our students are proficient speakers, middle school can be a challenging time socially. Students often worry about how they sound, whether they will make mistakes, or what their peers may think if they hear them speaking during testing. These concerns can create anxiety that prevents students from performing at their true ability level. Noise-canceling headphones will provide our students with a more private, focused, and supportive testing environment.

The impact extends beyond testing day. When students feel safe taking academic risks, they are more likely to engage in classroom discussions, practice language skills, and build confidence that carries into all areas of learning. Increased confidence and improved performance on TELPAS contribute directly to student achievement, language growth, and our school's accountability measures.
