Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a public career academy high school in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood on the west side of Chicago. They are about 75% Latinx and 20% African American. Approximately 88% of our students are low income.

They are wonderful young people that display an inquisitive drive to learn as much as possible and a great sense of humor and intelligence.

Many of our students will be the first in their families to attend college or a vocational program. They want to pursue degrees in education, law, the medical field, the arts, and technology.

I am hopeful that my students will be change-makers not only at school but in their communities. Many of them take on leadership roles in their clubs, activities, and sports and still others lend a helping hand when their peers need them. They overcome adversity everyday in order to achieve their academic and personal goals.

My Project

Our psychology and world studies course is transitioning to more project based learning which means regular access and use of laptops like Chromebooks is necessary. Students will use these devices to conduct research, use databases, access Google Classroom and the Google Suite of apps, receive feedback from their instructors, collaborate with their peers, share materials, watch and create content. They can also use them to apply for college, apprenticeships, scholarships, financial aid, and jobs.

Our students need to be prepared to be 21st Century learners and thinkers, which means use of technology is critical.

Students need exposure to as many resources as possible to thrive and be able to keep up with others in districts that are better resourced.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
