We've been busy this semester planning our curriculum for this non-fiction book about the climate crisis. \r\n\r\nAs a team we've re-read the book creating chapter summaries, word banks for each chapter, and visuals for each chapter. This will allow us to help all of our students who are at multiple reading levels, have special education needs, and may be English language learners. \r\n\r\nWe've also developed a weekly graphic organizer for students to fill out about what they read which asks them to pull out a piece of evidence regarding the climate crisis. Our hope is that at the end of reading the book in the spring, our students will use their new found knowledge and the evidence they've pulled from the text to write letters to their elected officials about what steps they believe should be taken to address the climate crisis. \r\n\r\nOur team also developed a google form to collect data before students start reading and then another form for after they are done, so we can compare and contrast their thoughts about reading and about their knowledge of the climate crisis. \r\n\r\nWe're so excited to get started in the new year! All the books have arrived and we've counted and labeled them. Starting in January, we'll be dedicating every Friday to reading our book in class and listening to it be read out loud. Because of your support, I now have a Surface Pro that has had a remarkable impact not only on my students' learning, but also on the way I plan, design, and deliver lessons every day. Many people are familiar with using technology at home, but in the classroom, this device has become a powerful instructional tool. The Surface Pro has transformed my lesson planning process by allowing me to create more interactive, engaging, and accessible materials. I can now design lessons that include real-time annotations, multimedia resources, and visuals that help students understand concepts more clearly. Planning is smoother, faster, and more creative, and the quality of the lessons I'm able to deliver has truly improved.\r\n\r\nThe ability to use the touchscreen and stylus has made a huge difference in how I teach. I can demonstrate problem-solving step-by-step, model writing strategies, or mark up student work directly on the screen during lessons. It feels more like I'm teaching with my students rather than in front of them, and that shift has made our learning environment more collaborative and dynamic. One of the most meaningful improvements has been the impact on my hard-of-hearing students. With the Surface Pro, I can easily enable captioning and display clear visual supports during presentations and videos. This ensures they never miss important information and can follow along with the same confidence as their peers. Watching them fully engage in lessons with the help of these tools has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nThe students are just as excited as I am. They love when I incorporate interactive elements into lessons—drawings, diagrams, multimedia clips, or quick digital check-ins to see what they've understood. These features help me adjust my teaching in real time and respond to their needs more effectively.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has not only placed a powerful device in my hands—it has truly elevated the way I teach. It has helped me create lessons that are more thoughtful, more accessible, and more engaging for every student in my classroom. Every spring our 65 sophomores choose an IB subject to pursue their essay in: English Literature, Spanish Literature, Psychology, History, Digital Society or Visual Arts. We then roll in the carts of books we have collected in each subject for the students to look through and they choose one to read over the summer.
