Fueling Success: Healthy Snacks for EC Students

My Project

My students are hardworking high schoolers in an Exceptional Children (EC) classroom in Haywood County, North Carolina. Many of my students have learning disabilities, attention difficulties, executive functioning challenges, and other barriers that can make it difficult for them to fully engage in the learning process. For some students, simply getting through a school day while managing academics, social expectations, and the demands of high school can be overwhelming.

Our classroom, known as Strategies, provides students with a safe and supportive place to receive academic assistance, organize assignments, work toward IEP goals, and develop the skills they need to become more independent learners.

We work hard to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking for help, making mistakes, and trying again.

One simple but meaningful way we can support our students is by providing healthy snacks. Many of our students arrive at school without having eaten breakfast or go long periods of time between meals. Hunger can make it even harder for students who already struggle with focus, attention, organization, and learning to stay engaged in their work.

With this project, we hope to provide student-friendly snacks that students can access throughout the school day. Having snacks available will help remove one more barrier to learning and allow students to focus their energy on their academics rather than being distracted by hunger.

Our goal is not simply to provide food. We want to create a classroom where students feel supported, valued, and ready to learn. By helping meet a basic need, our donors can help our students arrive at their work with greater focus and confidence.
