My Project

As a speech-language pathologist working with children with autism, I spend a significant amount of time creating and adapting materials so that my students can meaningfully access their education and communicate throughout the school day.

Many of my students need specialized visual and communication supports that are tailored to their individual needs.

I regularly create communication books, communication boards, visual schedules, choice boards, first/then boards, token boards and other behavioral supports. These materials help my students understand expectations, make choices, communicate their wants and needs, participate in activities and become more independent.

A laminator would be an incredibly valuable tool in my therapy room because these materials need to withstand frequent, daily use. Regular paper can quickly become ripped, bent, damaged or unusable, especially when materials are handled repeatedly throughout the day. Laminating them allows me to create durable resources that can be used again and again.

This laminator would be used every single day to create individualized supports for my students. A visual schedule might be used throughout the school day, a communication board might travel with a student from activity to activity, and a first/then board or token board might be used during speech therapy and classroom activities. Many of these supports can also be shared with families so that students can use familiar tools at home.

Something as simple as a laminator will have a huge impact because it will be used every day to create supports that help my students succeed. This laminator would allow me to quickly create, adapt and replace materials as my students’ needs change.
