Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are Rising Up to Get Smart. They are at least 2 grade levels below and thrive in an environment that is engaging and interactive.
Students who are motivated and engaged in learning tend to perform considerably higher academically and are better behaved than unmotivated and un-engaged peers.
My students love learning new things and connecting to the world through books, discussions, technology, and interactive hands-on activities. More than 80% of my students speak a language other than English at home, and many have just have entered the US less than 2 years ago. Due to budget cuts, the "arts" programs are limited and class sizes are increased. My students also lack cultural, social and experiential experiences both at home and in school. These factors put them at a huge disadvantage when compared to students in more affluent communities just 2-5 miles away. These students have the energy to learn and would extremely benefit from additional tools to do so.
My Project
Voice recorders and timers will help my students monitor themselves as they read so they can become fluent readers.
A reader is fluent when they can read with accuracy, speed, and understanding.
Helping students become fluent readers will help to increase their levels of comprehension. By helping my students become fluent readers, they will be able to move on to higher reading levels and therefore strengthen their comprehension skills. My students love going to the fluency center in my classroom and these recorders and timers will not only motivate them when completing the center but help hold them accountable.
