My students are energetic learners who thrive on learning and exploring the world around them. They are fascinated with why and how things work. They engage in the learning process through books, discussions and interactive hands-on activities. They have a huge interest for STEAM, especially in being engineers and designers of their own creations. My district, school, and thus classroom, is very diverse. More than 80% of the students speak a language other than English at home, and many have just have entered the US less than 2 years ago. Due to budget cuts, the "arts" programs are limited and class sizes are increased. My students also lack cultural, social and experiential experiences both at home and in school. These factors put them at a huge disadvantage when compared to students in more affluent communities just a few miles away. It is up to us to give these kids what they need in any way possible.
