My cute little First Graders are in their very first year of Spanish Dual Language Immersion! The vast majority of my students enter my classroom with no Spanish language experience and all of their learning is by immersion--I never speak to them in English! I have 64 students divided into 2 classes, which I teach every day. As these students become fluent Spanish-speakers, I see them as potential leaders in a diverse, global society.
Covid-19 has impacted my classroom in a variety of ways.
Because of the pandemic, I have found the need to dramatically increase the use of technology for instruction and practice. I have found the need to teach in smaller groups. I have found the need to provide individual student supplies and still figure out how to make sure they learn interpersonal skills. I have needed to accommodate for my students' social-emotional well-being and be supportive of their families. I have needed to provide more at-home instructional opportunities for students.
My Project
I am seeking resources, including Math games, Spanish emergent readers, and a Science kit about sound and light waves. The Math games will allow students to practice skills while I work with smaller groups of students. The Spanish readers will give students opportunities to practice reading in Spanish at home and at school. The Science kit will provide hands-on exposure to sound and light waves during whole class instruction.
Because I only speak to my students in Spanish, I try to find ways to help them feel happy and motivated to learn both the Spanish language and the academic content.
In my immersion classroom, I use Spanish to teach Math and Science, and I use Math and Science to teach Spanish!
