My advanced scenic carpentry students are always in search of new challenges that are relevant to their futures. Often, they seek out projects and experiences beyond our theatrical productions and the tools available in our scene shop. In this case, we hope to practice turning, which is the practice of using a lathe to produce items such as bowls, pens, spoons, and cabinetry/furniture-making skills.
These new detail-oriented woodworking tools and supplies will help to refine their future skills.
It is important to me to give all my students an opportunity to push themselves and develop skills that will help them in their futures. Using the lathe, new blades, and finishing tools, we will be able to enhance our classroom for both current and future students. These types of fine wood skills are becoming rarer and more in demand.
