Exploring Local Issues (in Oklahoma) Through Book Clubs

Help me give my students books about local issues that affect families in Oklahoma!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Rooted in the heart of Tulsa, OK, our high school offers a pathway to earn college credit during secondary years. In light of the fact that 100% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches, this opportunity (to earn college credit) allows students to pursue higher education and consider technical careers that would otherwise be difficult to enter. In this environment, our students work hard and dream big.

Driven to maximize their learning experience, our students learn to love reading.

One of my favorite moments last year occurred during our Shakespeare unit. When I announced that we would be watching the last two acts of the play we were reading (rather than read it together in class), a student-led riot nearly erupted. They WANTED to read Shakespeare rather than watch the play.

My Project

In an effort to understand the complexity behind local issues that affect students in Oklahoma (i.e. mass incarceration, foster care, school shootings, and police brutality), this project will enable students to analyze the intersection between narratives and real-life problems. By the end of the project (as indicated below), students will research a selected topic, explore why this issue hasn't yet been addressed, and then propose their OWN practical solutions

Phase 1 - Research

Students will be offered a choice to research one of the following issues that affect families living in Oklahoma: 1) Police Brutality, 2) Mass Incarceration, 3) Foster Care, 4) School Shootings.

Phase 2 - Past Efforts to Solve this Problem

In addition to understanding the nature of their selected topic, students will unpack the reasons why past efforts to solve this problem remain ineffective.

Phase 3 - Solutions

After researching the issue (and why past efforts have failed to solve it), students will then propose their OWN practical solutions and present accordingly.
