Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are creative, artistic, thoughtful, talkative and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects that challenges then them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to learn and collaborate with other students. I teach a combo classroom with 5th and 6th graders who have a range of different learning disabilities. I am a special education teacher who is always looking for ways to make learning fun, exciting, and interactive.

My Project

I chose this career as a Special Education Teacher because it is rewarding, and I am very passionate about helping students with special needs. Over the years I learned many academic strategies to improve students learning. However, I noticed towards the middle of the school year, students become less motivated and engaged. After brainstorming ideas to increase students’ engagement, a lightbulb went off. Students need more stimulation, besides the standard way of teaching, students want to play games!

According to research, using games in teaching can help increase student participation, foster social and emotional learning, and motivate students to take risks.

I recently transferred school districts and I am in need of resources such as games that will enhance students learning and make learning fun and collaborative. Games that will be an addition to the curriculum and help students understand the learning material with more ease. I have used games in the past and I saw a difference in students test scores and level of engagement during class activities and assignments. I believe that receiving these resources will make a huge difference in my students learning.
