Diverse Books in the Library

Help me give my students a collection of fiction and nonfiction books that reflect and celebrate our school's diversity.

My Project

I'm the librarian at a public high school with seventeen hundred students. They come from many different ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and they have a wide array of abilities and skills, which they develop in a variety of academic and career tracks. My school offers students many opportunities to shine whether through sports, arts, academic pursuits, or vocational training, and they do.

When my students come to the library looking for leisure reading material, they are often drawn to books featuring characters that look like they do, and they are drawn to books written by authors who look like they do.

Diverse books serve as both mirrors and windows. Students need to see themselves in the books they read, as this helps them learn about and embrace who they are; books can provide affirmation and strengthen a student's sense of identity. At the same time, students also need books that provide a glimpse of how people who differ from them see and experience the world; such books help teach students that other perspectives are not just valid, but valuable, too.

Diverse books can be launchpads for conversations about difficult topics, and they can be foundations for building empathy, community, understanding, and justice.
