Dawn Novels For Our Class

Help me give my students a new text to read to prepare them for their IB exams and the rigors of college. Dawn introduces students to challenging ideas about colonialism, "the alien," and power.

My Project

Our high school is a public school in Milwaukee, WI serving the needs of a diverse body of students, students whose first language is not English, and students with special needs. Our school has approximately 1,400 students. Additionally, King is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, utilizing a curriculum that encourages to think critically,, globally and allows students who come from places all over Milwaukee to find success in school and in the wider world. The IB program's rigorous curriculum also helps prepare students for the challenges of post-secondary education by offering college-level courses and curriculum to all students.

Because of this, students in IB Literature are arguably some of the best readers and writers in all of MPS, though they need literature and other materials in order to achieve success.

I am requesting copies of Octavia Butler's science-fiction novel Dawn because it will offer students an opportunity for them to develop their literacy and literary analysis skills. The text grapples with complex issues related to race, sex, colonialism, and power as Butler reflects on the effects of the human inclination to seek out and create a hierarchy. Furthermore, the text is a modernist response to some of the other authors and texts read in this class already such as the writings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students can therefore use this text to engage in discussions of intertextuality as they consider how these ideas apply to their own lives as well.
