This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a largely immigrant population that has a thirst for fun and success. Our school has multiple programs that meet the demand of our largely underprivileged population, including collegiate academy for those that are college bound and tech programs for those that are entering the workplace.

Being mostly composed of immigrants, our students often struggle to find the resources to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

Science is difficult in the best of environments, but when students can't focus, it becomes nearly impossible. Our students are really hard working and generally admirable in the challenges that they overcome, and I'd like to be able to help remove a few of those challenges.

My Project

Our Tampa school struggles with an old air conditioning unit that doesn't work properly when it is working at all. In addition, the humidity in our Florida classroom constantly approaches 100%. Students are constantly leaving the class to go find an area where the air functions, missing valuable instructional time.

When our room is loaded with warm bodies, the humidity gets so high that the walls sweat.

The students cannot get any relief from our barely-functional air conditioning unit and the best way to help them is to reduce the humidity with an education-saving dehumidifier.

This also ties into many of the subjects that we are learning the Chemistry including phase changes, gas laws and condensation.
