Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is composed of twelve 4-7 year old students who "listen, are kind friends, and work hard." Each of my students has an intellectual disability that limits their ability to access the general curriculum. They are mostly low to non-verbal, 8 students have down syndrome, and 4 experience developmental delays that require creative approaches to their learning. My students are from Watts, California and are predominantly first generation Latino-American and black students.
In spite of their disabilities, they are enthusiastic learners who love flipping through books, eagerly volunteer to lead our days of the week song, offer high-fives to congratulate their friends, and who never get tired of the hokey-pokey.
However, this is the first year that my classroom exists at my school, and for that reason, currently does not provide age or ability appropriate supplies and furniture to facilitate my students' learning. My goal for my students is to build a foundation for their independence, so that they may communicate their needs and ultimately function as productive members of society.
My students are smart. Given the proper resources, their learning and self-advocacy will soar.
My Project
My students are currently using tables that have been bolted to the ground, they are additionally too tall, and their position makes it challenging to help and supervise multiple students at once.
The kidney tables and storage units will facilitate transitions and enable my students to receive the support they need.
The bookcases will provide a space for my students to see the books available, as well as make it easier for our class librarian to organize our books everyday. Furthermore, the headphones will support my students' listening and communication skills, and the art supplies will support their visual learning abilities and encourage their creative intelligence.
