I am a theatre teacher at a high school. What I love about my students is how hard they will work to pull together to create something as a team. My tech students love to challenge themselves to solve unique problems presented by each show. My acting students love the challenge of creating a unique experience for our audiences for each show. Both my tech and acting students work as a team to learn about the craft of theatre and improve their skills.
The skills my tech and acting students gain from working on creating theatre together teach them lifelong skills in collaboration, creativity, and community.
Most of my students do not go on to pursue acting or tech beyond high school but they take these valuable skills into the workforce or college, which help them be successful in their college and career goals.
My Project
Since the pandemic my technical theatre students have had to work on many paper and at-home projects. They have missed out on opportunities for hands-on learning in our theatre shop and are eager to get new opportunities. Many of my students are wanting to gain more hands-on and real world experiences to help them find employment and college opportunities beyond high school in our new economy. Currently my tech students are only able to learn about hand sewing because we don't have a sewing machine or serger. With these machines and supplies students will have the opportunity to learn about designing and building costumes and get more hands-on learning opportunities. Students will have opportunities to build their design and construction portolios for the future. My acting students will also benefit from more student designed and created costumes for their productions.
Students benefit from having the opportunity to learn real-world hands-on skills in theatre that they can apply to future theatre endeavors and beyond.
Many of my tech students have expressed an interest in learning more sewing skills if we had the machines for them to learn these skills.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
