My Project

I am a reading teacher for grades Kindergarten-5th grade in a Title I school in Raleigh, NC. My students are a diverse group who speak a variety of languages, come from many different places, engage in various extracurricular activities, and embrace countless new experiences. What they have in common is a desire to learn.

Books help to build empathy and compassion in students by sharing the stories of others.

The books in this project make it easier to celebrate differences and the importance of caring for others. The books focus on a variety of topics including loss and grief, being new to a school, and physical disabilities. After reading each book, students will illustrate pictures to express how they can show compassion and kindness to someone like the character in the book. The books will give my students the opportunity to experience how compassion and empathy for others can make the world a better place. The positive affirmation notes will be used to encourage students to share them with friends to show compassion and empathy. The stickers will be given to students as a reminder of the importance of showing compassion and empathy to others. They will also give them to other students who they feel have shown compassion and empathy. I will monitor and assess student understanding of the concepts of compassion and empathy through their illustrations, group discussions and student explanations of who will be receiving the stickers and positive notes.
