This resource made such a powerful impact on the acquisition of foundational reading skills, for my 1st grade students.\r\n I would introduce the Secret Story during whole group instruction before using it in small groups later in the day. The stories are the perfect length to hook and most importantly KEEP the attention of 6 1/2-year-olds. But perhaps my most favorite thing about the Secret Story is that it never loses sight of the purpose behind the story- teaching the reading rule. So many other reading materials and programs get bogged down in creating elaborate characters and plots that the reading rule gets buried and students miss it!\r\n The best part, after teaching the story, is to hear and see my students using the story with each other and in their independent work. After working with one of my 6-year-old BFFs, who is DETERMINED to figure this reading thing out, recently spelled every single word correctly on his spelling assessment! And boy did we celebrate!
