Coding and Competing with Robots!

Help me give my students the vex robotics equipment that they need to code and compete!

Mr. Stinson Mira Loma High School
Sacramento, CA Grades 9-12

My Students

My students are the lower-income students at an International Baccalaureate school. While many of the students who attend my school commute in from other parts of the city to take part in the college-like education that my school offers, my students are from our less affluent neighborhood. This means that they are at a disadvantage academically and socially.

They are often behind in math, science, computer science and life experiences than more affluent families.

My goal as a teacher is to find ways to make up the difference through awareness, aggressive (but obtainable) goals and cross-curriculum experiences that inspire them to want to do better for themselves!

My Project

At MLHS, we teach individuals the skills they need to successfully compete in robotics competitions hosted by VEX Robotics. We implement skills taught in math such as problem solving and more mathematical calculations in code for robots. Creating counters and calculating the number of repetitions along with algorithms to account for any possible situations a robot may encounter during the autonomous period of any competition are some of the many ways we include the usage of mathematics in our activities. We strive to help club members know the basics of robotics by teaching them programming skills in C++, the programming language we code in, so that they are better prepared to work collaboratively with the V5 IDE created by VEX itself. When coding the possible actions of the robot, we have found that individuals better understand how math applies to the real world. Since robotics requires the use of equations and algorithms to better prepare for competitions and build a functional robot, we hope that members of Mira Loma VEX Robotics develop a deeper understanding and love for mathematics and its applications. Thanks to numerous fundraisers, donations, and ultimately the kindness of our community, we were able to raise enough funds for one robotics kit. However we do not have the funds to account for spare parts or registration fees. We hope organizations such as yours, support our goal in helping students better understand how mathematics applies to the real world through rapidly developing fields such as robotics and programming.
