This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am asking for air hardening clay and aluminum foil to be used to create sculptures with my students. The art program in this school is funded entirely from donations and having air hardening clay, will make a great sculpture project for kindergarten students. They will learn about armatures and how to hand build sculptures. Yesterday, while working on the faux stained glass project, one of my students declared, "We love coming to art!"

With such enthusiasm from my students, I am writing to Donors Choose to ask for colored clay and aluminum foil to give my kids the best materials for sculpture projects.

Last year, third graders worked with colored foam clay to make gourds and it proved to be a hit with the kids. Air hardening clay is also not messy; it doesn't require washing hands, so it fits well in the twenty-eight minute format of the school's art classes. I have gathered a big box of scrap plastic wrap to create an armature which would need to be covered with aluminum foil which is then covered with air hardening clay.

With air hardening clay, and several rolls of aluminum foil, the students can create sculptures of snowmen, fruits, food, or cactus, which are subjects familiar to them. In the art room, we have about fifty books of how to draw various animals and those can also be used for referencing sculptural subjects. If they have their hearts set on another subject, I can pull up photos on the art room's smart board and enable them to make that sculpture also.

Thank you in advance! Most of my students are financially disadvantaged; many of them get access to art materials only at school. Your donation brings learning and joy to them!
