This project is providing 6 classrooms of second graders with the challenging fun of learning new techniques and working with materials new to the art room at Hillsboro Elementary. We are using these resources to create two kinds of Christmas ornaments: Tooled Foil Ornaments and Metallic Paper Ribbon Curls. The Tooled Foil Ornaments are mimicking traditional Mexican Tin Ornaments called Hojalata, and the Paper Ribbon Curls are mimicking glass blown corkscrew ornaments.\r\n I created a sample board of the project, so students can see both the metallic paper curls and the gold foil stars and green foil Christmas trees. I walked the board from table to table in the art room, showing students what they'll be working on soon, and they were happy and excited. \r\n My students' reactions when they first saw the materials mirrored my own: the metallic colored papers are very beautiful; anyone can easily get lost in simply staring at the gorgeous colors.\r\n It was new for the second graders to learn the paper curling technique, and how to create a loop with pipe cleaners so they can be hung on a tree. It was a learning challenge that is exactly age appropriate for second graders. Every student persisted until they caught on to the techniques, exclaiming \"I got it!\" when they successfully created the curl and loop forms.\r\n The paper curls ornaments will be hung on the silver Christmas tree that will be displayed near the school's library. They will also be hung on the school's larger artificial pine Christmas tree.\r\n Another class of second graders has worked on the shooting star ornaments. The foil has a gold side (front) and a silver side (back); so the paper shooting star patterns are taped to the silver (back) side so the texturized marks will protrude outwards. The classes that work on tooling the colored foils will watch a presentation on the smart board about the history of Hojalata ornaments. They also handled several Hojalata tin ornaments that I have purchased for them to see. Soon, another class of second graders will work on creating the green foil Christmas tree ornaments. \r\n It means a lot to my school's kids to have good art materials—they love making nice art products! These ornaments will be displayed at our school's Christmas concert in December, as well as in our district's Administration Building in November through December. It has supplied 7 rooms of kindergarten students with joy-filled clay projects during art. They have created snowmen, caterpillars, cupcakes, mice, and bunnies. Several rooms are still in progress, creating elephants and mice.\r\n\r\n Word gets out among students, and now third graders have also begun requesting clay projects! With many families having multiple siblings in the school, they have seen youngers kids' clay projects and want to do clay art themselves. \r\n\r\n Our school has plenty of 2-d art supplies on hand, but it is a real treat for the kids to be able to work with air-hardening clay. The kids created images on the scratch art paper by drawing, and by using stencils. Two classrooms used stencils, including Halloween images, and images of dragons. Several more classrooms drew fireworks in the sky, overlooking a lake, including the reflections on the water. They loved doing this so much that they requested more scratch art projects, and so some classes are creating images of snowflakes on the remaining scratch art paper, and some with their own drawing ideas.\r\n\r\n Several classrooms used the scratch art paper to create drawings of robots. They first practiced drawing a robot on regular paper, using the step by step procedure in the books, and then used the scratch art paper to create the robot drawings. You can see in the attached photos how they carefully created their robots and then enhanced the robots with words and other small hearts and other designs around the robots. \r\n\r\n Several classes used the scratch art paper to create a drawing of fireworks seen over a lake, and they did a marvelous job of drawing exploding fireworks in the sky, with reflections in the water below. It was a joyful experience for the kids! You can see in their faces how happy and proud they are of the art they created! \r\n\r\n All of this scratch art turned out so beautifully that these pieces will be displayed in annual Christmas concert at our school. The children now understand how to use a stencil, how to draw using a step by step guide, and how to use scratch art paper with a stylus, which they had never done before. The 7 classrooms of 3rd graders are in process, happily working away on this project. The photos show how happy the students are and how proud they are of their work. The students were offered a choice between a Christmas candle design, a rose design, a Christmas Tree design, or to create their own design. Once the designs are finished, the students add the crinkled aluminum foil into the page protector. You can see one girl has done that step in the photos. The next step will be to create a silver frame out of HVAC silver tape, and put it on the page protectors, beautifully framing the artwork. The silver frame will really enhance the artwork and add to the silvery effect of the aluminum foil. Once all the artwork is framed with the silver tape, typed names will be cut out and glued onto the front of the artwork, and the artwork will be hung on the windows and walls of the school cafeteria for the Christmas concert. Parents can then see their own child's artwork after the concert.
