Help me give my students a peaceful and calming aquarium zenscape to help with emotional well-being and a place for our rescue Koi fish Dustin Swimmerlake to grow.
I have some of the most incredible and unique students! They come from a very diverse background (Hawai'ian, Micronesian, Philippine, Tongan, Japanese, Pacific Islanders, Polynesian and more). There are so many cultures and languages, every one unique just like my students. Many of these cultures don't have a strong tradition of modern science and it is therefore positively challenging introducing them to science.
My students are really into phenomena and I want them to explore how an individual adapts to its environment depending on resources.
That's why I want to use this opportunity to study a classroom pet throughout the course of the school year and track his growth as a function of his new environment. I believe that this experience will be valuable to them as they learn best from real-life experiences and love any labs and activities I provide. The use of a koi fish is relatable to them as it's a commonly found pond fish on the island of Maui.
Our public schools struggle to receive enough funding, with science being one of the most expensive areas to fund.
My Project
A classroom pet provides a calming effect on student and creates a peaceful environment to learn about science and biology. A lot of students in high school struggle emotionally. That is where this zenscape brings a little more calm to their day. The visual experience along with the sound of water flowing will absolutely help students stay calm and focused.
I also plan on using this as a learning experience by measuring the size of the rescue koi fish as he adapts to a larger tank.
I have a fish tank and a rescue koi named Dustin Swimmerlake.
In addition to bringing my students joy and stress relief, I would like to have them track his growth as he is now adapting to a new larger fish tank. At the moment Dustin’s tank needs sprucing up and a few friends more his size that he won’t eat. Eating his friends is how he ended up alone and “evicted” from his previous home. By caring for an animal I hope to also learn students about compassion and respect for other life.
