Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school in Salt Lake City where a large portion of our students are immigrants, refugees, and/or live under the poverty line. As such, they don't often see themselves reflected in their ELA curriculum. As an AVID demonstration school, our students are taught to take pride in their work and dream of opportunities after high school that otherwise may have seemed out of reach. These students often experience opportunity gaps which lead to low literacy, language barriers, and a disinterest in reading, which we at Granite Park strive to overcome by providing relevant materials and lessons to our students.

My Project

A majority of my students are either from immigrant/refugee families and/or live below the poverty line. They tend to struggle academically, have lower reading levels, and are often underserved. This also means that it can be difficult to select books that meet my students' interests and reading levels. I've given my kids a list of books to choose from in hopes of finding stories they can connect with. Most of the books I presented to them followed diverse writers and/or characters that I hoped they could connect with. From that list, my students have selected the Novel "Restart" by Gordon Korman for the Core English classes and "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah for the Honors English classes. The first novel tells the story of a former bully and star athlete who gets amnesia from an accident and thus receives the opportunity to start over and make different choices. Bullying has become prevalent in our school and my hope is that this novel will help my students understand how to prevent and overcome bullying as well as exploring the notion of having a "fresh start". The second novel is about Trevor Noah's childhood in South Africa around the end of Apartheid. My students are very interested in learning about Apartheid and the lasting consequences of legal segregation in another country. Since several of them are from African countries, they feel a connection to Trevor Noah and the misconceptions many in the US have about Africa. I also hope that we can use it to do some projects that focus on comparing and contrasting with topics from the book.

Currently, we do not have access to many class sets of books and this would help me get a physical book in the hand of every student.
