Children's Literature That Celebrates Diversity

Help me give my students children's literature that celebrate diversity and honor the differences that make us all unique.

My Students

We are a Title I school in a highly transient area of a military town. My students are all second and third graders in a neighborhood that struggles economically. Nearly one hundred percent of our students qualify for free lunch and breakfast. That, however, does not diminish their enthusiasm for learning, especially when it relates to things they are passionate about!

Our students are smart and very capable students with a true love of learning through real experiences.

The economic challenges do, however, have an impact on what they have available to help them learn. These are changing times, and we have to constantly look for new ways to keep students engaged and build skills that will prepare them for potential careers.

My Project

Our school population has become increasingly diverse in recent years. I want our library collection to accurately represent our young readers through diverse characters and storylines. Our students should feel the library is an open and welcoming place where everyone fits in and belongs.

I hope to build an equitable collection that inspires all of our students not only to love books and reading but also encourages them to celebrate diversity and practice empathy.

This project is full of diverse book titles that celebrate our differences and respect all cultures. Included also are markers and crayons that celebrate the skin tones represented around the world in a more accurate way. It is my hope that by filling our school library with resources that celebrate our diversity we can cultivate an anti-racist community
