Our veggies made it through the cold weather and we've been harvesting weekly for the last month. We've been harvesting collard greens, kale, cabbage, broccoli and more. We now have fresh crops of onions, beets, carrots, radishes, peas and more growing in the garden. The garden never ends. We just change what we are growing. When its cold, we plant cold hardy veggies. \r\n\r\nRoger, the bearded dragon is very comfortable in his lair. He comes out to eat and explore. He loves being with others. The kids are so excited about Roger and I do have to refocus them on the lesson at hand when Roger gets insistent on coming out to play. \r\nNow that we have the heating pad, he explores the other side of the tank more than he did before. The project was to start breeder colonies of dubia roaches and mealworms. But our students also have to learn about life cycles and animals who's babies look like the adult and those that don't. \r\n\r\nThe dubia babies look like the adults, The meal worms don't. The dubia's and mealworms both shed their exoskeletons to grow bigger. \r\n\r\nThe gecko and bearded dragon love the results and getting to eat the offspring. The dubia roaches happen to be the most nutritious. And, adding another layer in it. Its recommended that you feed the roaches the same veggies you feed the bearded dragons. You are what you eat. They will be used as frost blankets in our school garden to keep those more sensitive plants warm and growing. The kids opened the box yesterday to see what we received. I need to do some sewing on them. I want to make sleeves for them to slide onto PVC pipes like a curtain on a curtain rod. That will make it easier to anchor the ends at the edge of the garden. \r\n\r\nYesterday when the garden club was meeting some of the kids were screaming out in \"sadness\" because we had harvested the heads of broccoli the week before and there is no more broccoli right now. The principal came in to see what all the noise was about and he joked in surprise that the kids wanted to eat broccoli. Funny enough, the meal they were eating at the time had small cups of fresh broccoli (not from the garden) in it. The students learn so much about nature and these animal's natural habitat. We also learn about their physical and behavioral adaptations. The bearded dragon is interesting in that it diet flips from youth to adult. As a juvenile, 80 percent of its diet must be protein. As an adult, 80 percent of its diet must be vegetable and fruit. They also learn what foods to give it sparingly to prevent it from getting fat. They love getting to hold and interact with the bearded dragon. We talk too about what fake plants are safe in his habitat. He will try to eat them.
